Is your work changing, or just your tools? A question for the modern workforce

We often hear about the changing nature of work. But is it the work itself that's transforming, or simply the tools we use to do it? This is a crucial question, especially when we talk about productivity.

At eCom Learning Solutions, we're constantly thinking about these shifts and how we can help our customers navigate them. And in this article, eCom Chair, Linda Steedman, shares her insights on the changing nature of work, the impact of AI, and why businesses must rethink productivity and skills for the future. Are we truly more efficient?

Productivity is a tricky beast to measure. Where are the benchmarks? I recently stumbled upon a box of old 3.5" floppy disks. Each one held what was probably a month's worth of documents and spreadsheets. Now, I could create that many documents in a few days. But does that mean I'm more productive?

Or am I just a slave to my computer software, creating more documents, working harder, and having less time to think because everything needs to be done instantly? Email, with its demand for immediate feedback, certainly contributes to this feeling of constant pressure.

Are we just busier, or are we achieving more?

Don't get me wrong, today's digital tools are vastly superior to what we had before. But are we truly more productive in terms of generating revenue and achieving organizational goals? Or are we just busier, doing the same basic tasks in a different way?

A chance to redefine work

Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room: AI. It's the rising star, ushering in a new era of operational models. Make no mistake, the sheer volume of investment and government backing pouring into AI guarantees a societal shift even faster than the PC or the internet revolution. This is our chance to redefine work itself, not just see AI as another tool.

The shift in workforce skills

Think about it: AI can write code beautifully, but it doesn't grasp the underlying problem the code is supposed to solve. We're already seeing a shift in demand, with companies prioritizing analysts and problem-solvers over traditional programmers.

If we're going to re-engineer the work, we need to re-skill the workforce. Otherwise, we risk falling behind the competition.

Preparing for disruption

These new operating models will disrupt our working lives, and we need to be ready to embrace the change. We're at the dawn of the AI revolution, and its full impact is still unknown. Early signs are emerging in healthcare, robotics, and media production, hinting at the transformative power of this technology.
